The Baal’s Bridge Square
This authentic replica was given to Brother Cochrane M. Taylor, Past Master, Lodge Greenock St. John’s No. 175 by R. W. Brother Thomas S. Redpath, Past Master, Lodge Castlereigh Home Guard No. 694 (Irish Constitution) Honorary Member of Lodge Greenock St. John’s No. 175 to be presented to the Lodge on Brother Redpath’s behalf.
The replica Baal’s Bridge Square is a limited edition of 500 in ‘Distressed’ Silver Hallmarked and numbered. The one presented by Brother Redpath is numbered 87 representing Gibson Masonic Lodge No. 87 (I.C.) Belfast with whom Lodge Greenock St. John’s No. 175 have had an association since 1972. The Square was struck from a mould taken from the original to mark the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Provincial Grand Lodge of North Munster.
This ‘Baal’s Bridge Square, with many other artifacts will be on show at the Masonic Exhibition being held by The Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire West, in the McLean Museum, Kelly Street, Greenock during December 2003 and January 2004.
“The old brass square, known as the Baal’s Bridge Square, was recovered from beneath the foundation stone of Baal’s Bridge in Limerick when the bridge was being rebuilt in 1830. It is inscribed “I will strive to live with Love and Care Upon the Level By the Square”, a heart appears in each angle and bears the date, 1507.
