Bicentenary Celebrations of Lodge Greenock St. John’s
Lodge Greenock St. John’s, chartered on 1 February 1790, marked a significant milestone in its distinguished history when it celebrated 200 years of continuous service to Freemasonry and the local community on 10 February 1990.
The bicentenary celebrations commenced with a special ceremony of rededication within the Lodge, reaffirming the principles and traditions that had guided the brethren throughout two centuries of existence. The ceremony was conducted by the Most Worshipful Grand Master Mason, Bro. Brigadier Sir Gregor McGregor of McGregor, accompanied by the office-bearers of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Their presence added considerable distinction to the occasion and underscored the importance of the anniversary within Scottish Freemasonry.
During the proceedings, the brethren reflected upon the Lodge’s long and proud history, recalling the dedication and commitment of generations of members who had contributed to its success and reputation since the granting of its charter in 1790. The rededication ceremony served not only as a tribute to the past but also as a reaffirmation of the Lodge’s commitment to the values of brotherhood, charity, integrity, and service for future generations.
Following the formal proceedings, the celebrations continued at Greenock Town Hall, where approximately 200 brethren gathered for a commemorative banquet. The event provided an opportunity for members, visitors, and distinguished guests to share in the fellowship and camaraderie that have long been hallmarks of the Lodge. Toasts were offered, memories recounted, and achievements celebrated as those present honoured two centuries of Masonic endeavour.
The bicentenary celebrations represented a memorable chapter in the history of Lodge Greenock St. John’s. They paid tribute to the vision of its founders, recognised the contributions of countless brethren over the preceding two hundred years, and looked forward with confidence to the continued prosperity and service of the Lodge in the years ahead.
